State seeks modification to interim order on jallikattu

The Tamil Nadu Government on Sunday moved an urgent application in the Supreme Court seeking a modification to the Friday’s interim order refusing to allow the jallikattu (bull fight) festival in Alanganallur and other places in Tamil Nadu during Pongal holidays. The court had only permitted the rekhla (bullock cart) race.

Jallikattu is a part of pongal festivities since 4000 years and people of tamil nadu cannot imagine pongal day without jallikattu. Following the stay imposed by the supreme court, people in and around madurai and adjoining areas are planning wide spread protests asking for removal of the ban.
